• Estimated that over 130 million women have had FGM performed on them.

• Egypt, Mali, and the Sudan have over a 90% mutilation rate for women.
• Female Genital Mutilation is done primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa and some parts of the Middle East
• 3 Million girls are at risk for FGM annually in Africa
• 90% of FGM done is Type I, II, and IV; 10% is type III
• Type III or Infibulation is considered the most extreme form of FGM and has a 74% rate in the Sudan
• Religion, customs and traditions, and ethnicity are the main factors that determine the type of FGM used and the prevalence of it.
  Prevalence of FGM is unknown in the United States but immigrants who come from areas of the world have continued their practices in the U.S., Several court-cases have appeared in regards to FGM in the U.S. where the parents are prosecuted by state legislature.
