What is Female Genital Mutilation?

Picture
Female Genital Mutilation also known as Female Circumcision and Female Genital Cutting is a form of a surgery performed on young girls, mostly in African and Middle Eastern countries. It is almost always done in poor conditions, leading to some serious health consequences and even death.
It is thought to have strong ties to the Muslim faith but religious scholars deny it because there are records of it being associated with different faiths as well. Female Genital Mutilation has more to do with an identity of a certain culture or a tribe and especially their way of "preparing" a young girl for marriage, preserving her virginity and securing her future husband's sexual satisfaction.
